  • Levy Memorial Garden, N16 – the Big Plant this Sunday

    The Levy Memorial Garden is located at the south end of Yoakley Road, just off Church Street.

    Until recently it was a rather neglected space but members of Transition Town Stoke Newington and local residents have taken it over and are doing a sterling job of cheering it up.

    I just came across this rather lovely story of democracy in action over this often overlooked public space in the heart of Stoke Newington.

    Last weekend’s planting session was canceled thanks to the delightful bank holiday weather so it’s been rescheduled to this Sunday from 10.30am to 1pm.

    Come down on Sunday to help out and keep your fingers crossed for fine weather…

    Hello all,

    The Big Plant, which was rained off last weekend, will instead be happening this weekend. Same time, same place.

    The Levy Memorial garden is a public space which is well used but, until recently, has been more than a little bare.

    Together with the help of local residents and people who regularly use the garden, TTSN is giving the garden a whole new lease of life. The idea is to create a true community garden that can be nurtured and enjoyed by all – not just by current garden users but hopefully by many more people through getting involved in its design, care and pleasure.

    Last weekend, 5 big (BIG) raised beds were constructed. This Sunday we are going to be filling these beds with veg, fruit bushes and wild flowers.

    Come along do and help to make this a really special space that is bursting with colour and life.

    All those who have attended previous seed planting events in the garden please bring along your little plant-lets so that they can be planted out.

    And there will be cake.

    Anyone who feels they could help with organising the event on Sunday or who would be willing to do a compost run on Saturday (they are giving away free compost at Haggerston Park), please get in touch with Eleanor.

    Help with collecting compost would be especially appreciated – we managed to fill 4 of the 5 beds last weekend, but there is still one bed completely empty and the others, after various rain showers, do look as though they could do with topping up.

  • New Transition Town Stoke Newington Website Launched

    After various problems with the ning site, we now have a shiny new website which is looking very good indeed:

    It’s got group pages so you can see the latest happenings in each of TTSN’s gropus, a forum for more live discussions about everything Transition, an events calendar, social networking tools, blogs, video and picture uploads. Basically it’s got it all and it looks lovely. Good work for setting this up Selim!

    Go and register, join the Buildings Group (and any others that are of interest) and start communicating! The ning site will slowly be phased out but will be open for a while as people move across.

  • TTSN 1st Birthday – Auction of Promises

    It’s Transition Town Stoke Newington’s first birthday celebrations on Thursday 21st. Come down to Pangea Project and join the party with all the other TTSNers.

    There will also be an auction of promises to raise funds for TTSN, with a very wide range of fantastic things up for grabs including singing lessons, french lessons, a rap workshop, GIMP lessons (something that I’m after and no it’s not what you’re thinking), a week of packed lunches,  tickets to London zoo, a music video shoot an osteopathy session…

  • TTSN Social This Thursday – Food & Live Music

    Once again we have our regular monthly social, this time hosted by the Food Group. As ever, these socials are a great time for new members to come and find out what is going on, as well as being a lovely way for us all to keep in touch, and learn something new.

    The evening will start with a shared meal from about 7.30. This will be followed by a short presentation by the food group including a film or two about fishing. At ten, the Rocky Mountain Boys will have us toe tapping to Blue Grass. Come along!

  • Buildings Group Meeting @ Pangea Project on Monday 12th December

    Just a quick note to say that there will be a Transition Town Stoke Newington Buildings Group meeting at Pangea Project on Monday 12th at 7pm. More information can be found here.

    Don’t worry if you can’t make it. We’ll be meeting on the 2nd Monday of each month so the next one will be on 11th January of the next decade.

  • RefurbN16 introduction at Pangea Project

    Many thanks to all who came along to hear about our plans for the Buildings Group home energy efficiency refurbishment project at Pangea Project on Thursday.

    The evening started with food and the filming of TTSN’s submission to The Wave. If you’re in London on Saturday 5th December, make sure you get down to the demonstration when we’ll be encircling parliament with a wave of blue to demonstrate our commitment to a safe climate and future.

    I followed this with a presentation highlighting the size of the problem (household CO2 emissions account for a quarter of the UK’s total emissions, which need to be reduced by 80% by 2050), what our plans are for this project and a brief description of the best strategy for reducing energy consumption in the home.

    Fran then took over, explaining the benefits of refurbishing old homes versus building new ones and describing exactly how a typical draughty and poorly insulated Victorian home can be turned into a very low energy consumption home.

    Afterwards we had a lively discussion about the subject and we were both very encouraged by the enthusiasm shown.  We’ve now been contacted by about 10 different people who are interested in taking part in the project which is an excellent start. We’ll be having monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month with the first being on the 14th December (venue to be decided).

    Now the ball’s rolling we’ve got a bit of work to do…
